It’s hot… hot hot! A perfect day to stay home, lay low and do cool things. It’s a family reading books, playing games, running through the sprinklers, and sipping Vanilla Lemon-Limeade type of day.
Vanilla Lemon-Limeade Recipe
If you don’t already have a vanilla bean sitting in your sugar jar, I’d highly recommend snapping one in half and plopping the pieces in with your sugar. Give the sugar a good stir once a day and it will be ready to use in a couple weeks with the vanilla bean still useful for baking. If you really want the heady aroma of vanilla in your sugar, split the bean, scrape the seeds out and stir that in with the sugar for at least a week– aaah, heavenly! It’s fabulous in your hot tea and chocolate chip cookies too. If you don’t have vanilla sugar, this recipe is still tasty, so don’t let that stop you.
Put the juice of 4 lemons and 4 limes (about 1 1/2 cups) in a large bowl or pitcher. Stir 1 1/2 cups of granulated white sugar infused with vanilla in the bowl and stir. Combine sugar juice with 8 cups warm water and chill. I prefer to add more water and chill it rather than water it down with ice. If you want to drink the lemon-limeade immediately, start with 6-7 cups of cold water and taste it before adding the remaining water.
We reuse our local dairy farm Broguiere’s glass jars to hold the lemon-limeade and keep it extra chilly… and it looks so pretty, doesn’t it?
I hope to have more cooling summer recipes up this week including an entire BBQd meal, and I’ll be using that vanilla sugar again to make a vanilla ice cream with chocolate shavings.
